For a full description of the archaeological methodology please refer to section four of the WSI (Warrender 2022). The archaeological evaluation consisted of 42 trenches measuring 30m by 2m (Figure 3). These were located to sample 4% of the total area impacted by the development. The trenches were excavated by means of a mechanical excavator with a 2m wide toothless ditching bucket. All mechanical excavation was conducted under the supervision of a qualified archaeologist. The objective of the evaluation was to establish the presence or absence of archaeological remains on the site, and to collect enough information on any significant remains to devise a suitable mitigation strategy. A total of 42 trenches were excavated, with eight containing archaeological features. Three Post Medieval boundary ditches and one gully were identified, overall these are of low significance as it is distinct that the features are relatively recent in date and their function is clear. All surviving features were shallow with no artefacts or datable material recovered. Based on these results of the evaluation at Funtley Road, Fareham, no further archaeological works are recommended.
