Abstract

En regiones áridas del norte de Chile el uso del agua de mar es considerada como una alternativa única para el desarrollo industrial. Particularmente, la industria minera conlleva un elevado consumo de agua dentro sus procesos unitarios, donde el uso de agua de mar en la actualidad ya es una realidad. Sin embargo, una de las grandes desventajas de este recurso es su elevada corrosividad que promueve diversos daños en equipos, instalaciones y/o partes metálicas, así como cambios en las propiedades superficiales de los minerales a procesar. En el presente estudio se realiza una comparación del comportamiento electroquímico entre el acero al carbono AISI 1020 y el mineral pirita ambos inmersos en agua de mar y agua potable; además se estudia la influencia de la calidad química del agua sobre la interacción galvánica del par acero al carbono-mineral pirita. Para este propósito se utilizan técnicas electroanalíticas, que apuntan a la determinación de parámetros cinéticos y en particular la tasa de oxidación. Los resultados relevantes muestran una tasa de oxidación afectada por la concentración de oxígeno y sales disueltas en las soluciones de estudio. El mecanismo de este comportamiento se explica en términos de parámetros electroquímicos y variables de operación.
