Abstract

Las Historietas nacionales configuran un corpus literario de gran calidad y excelente pulso narrativo, fundamentalmente las narraciones ambientadas en la Guerra de la Independencia, como El carbonero alcalde, El afrancesado o El ángel de la guarda, elogiadas tempranamente por la crítica o novelistas coetáneos al autor desde el momento mismo de su aparición, como en el caso, entre otros, de Revilla, Valera o Pardo Bazán. Sin embargo, sus novelas, como El Niño de la Bola o El escándalo, fueron criticadas y analizadas desde una óptica bien distinta, asaz negativa, por considerarlas tendenciosas, como en el caso de la novelista Pardo Bazán o el propio Valera. Ejemplos que sintetizan a la perfección la admiración que sintieron también los lectores por los cuentos alarconianos, considerados como auténticas joyas literarias, escritos sin tendencia ideológica, inspirados en la tradición, nacidos en los epígonos del Romanticismo e influenciados por la savia popular. Sus cuentos La buenaventura, La corneta de llaves, El extranjero o El libro talonario, entre otros, muestran con exactitud la enorme capacidad de Alarcón para el género cuento, de ahí que se le considere una figura clave en el canon de la literatura española, un maestro del arte narrativo breve.
