Abstract

A discrepância transversal da maxila é um componente muito frequente das más oclusões, tanto dentárias como esqueléticas, geralmente acompanhadas de atresia, mordida cruzada posterior e/ou apinhamento na arcada superior. O expansor rápido da maxila é um dispositivo ortodôntico ortopédico fixo que permite a abertura da sutura palatina mediana, aumentando assim o perímetro da arcada . Essa intervenção melhora, no que diz respeito à respiração e, em alguns casos, quando a passagem das vias aéreas são muito estreitas e atrésicas. Com o intuito de gerar maior expansão na região anterior, foi desenvolvido o expansor “em leque” que no Brasil é conhecido como “Haas Borboleta”. Uma dobradiça foi adicionada na porção posterior do aparelho com a finalidade de restringir a expansão excessiva na região intermolares. Além disso, por apresentar menores dimensões e dispensar a parte acrílica, este aparelho parece ser uma alternativa mais confortável e higiênica para o paciente. Os resultados apontaram que é de grande unanimidade que o disjuntor tipo Hyrax utilizado, por não possuir o corpo acrílico, apresenta a vantagem de ser mais higiênico, e assim, evitar irritações na mucosa palatina decorrentes da impacção alimentar.
