Heinrich Pera

Authors: Kuppe, Gerlinde;
Abstract

Heinrich Pera (1938-2004) initially began studying philosophy and theology in Erfurt. Due to an eye disease, however, he became increasingly involved in medicine, pastoral care and ethics, at the same time training as a nurse. The pastorally accompanied, holistic care of the sick and euthanasia was to become his life's theme. In the GDR, he tried to implement such ideas in Halle (Saale) and to found a crisis counselling centre and finally - only after reunification - a hospice. In September 1989, he organised the first hospice congress in the GDR.
