86. Psychotria polita Valeton in Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 61: 95. 1927. Lectotypus (designated by SOHMER, 1988: 324): PAPUA NEWGUINEA: NE New Guinea, Etappenberg, 850 m, 16.X.1912, Ledermann 9311 (L [L0001229] image seen). Notes. – This species was described from New Guinea, and this name was lectotypified by SOHMER (1988) even though he considered its identity too unclear to include it in his formal treatment. The holotype specimen was deposited at B, and has been destroyed. The lectotype is the only authentic material of Psychotria polita known, and has only very young inflorescences so its identity cannot be determined easily. SOHMER (1988) suggested that P. polita might be the same as P. rostrata Blume from Java, another species of uncertain identity. The type specimen of P. polita does have the yellowish green drying color and hard fragmented stipules of Eumachia, but the identity of this name is otherwise unclear so it is not recognized as a species of Eumachia here.
