ABSTRACT This article discusses the diversity of life and the key elements related to biological and cultural evolution, and the alterities of its interpretation. Here we analyze key elements of western knowledge and the evolution of some relevant terms and concepts in environmental discourse, reviewing and discussing in detail the approaches from the biological sciences point of view. We also discuss and analyze the current mechanisms of functioning of the so-called “conservation of nature”, from their own statements, and the scopes of the science pointing out conservation. We discuss some elements from the different visions and interpretations about the crises of humanity in relation to the diversity of life. The work of analysis-synthesis of information and knowledge herein shown was based on extensive documentary research, as well as the review of notes of the author's experiences in spaces ranging from knowledge exchange with heterogeneous actors, teaching activities and research, as well as the participation in public politics. Currently there is a debate about a “global crisis”. We affirm that this crisis of knowledge is not only a crisis of human though but a mixture of complexities, a multidimensional crisis which includes an environmental dimension. This article aims to provide elements for exchange, training and debate on the diversity of life and its threats.
