Ceratopogonidae This worldwide family contains 5,922 species (Evenhuis & Pape 2011), but presumably there are twice that number (Marshall 2012). Rondani (1860 b, 1969 c, 1875c) described two Palaearctic and one Oriental nominal species, all three considered as valid (Wirth 1973, Remm 1988, Borkent 2016). Dominiak & Szadziewski (2010) designated a lectotype for Ceratopogon aristolochiae. Rondani, 1860 in the MZUF. Except for the type material of Ceratopogon pictellum Rondani, 1869, which is presumed lost, the type material has been recovered for all nominal species and is distributed between the MZUF (two) and MSNG (one).
