Amblyomma varanense

Authors: Guglielmone, Alberto A.; Petney, Trevor N.; Robbins, Richard G.;
Abstract

133. Amblyomma varanense (Supino, 1897a). An Australasian and Oriental species, all of whose parasitic stages are usually found on Squamata: Varanidae, Pythonidae and Elapidae, but they have rarely been collected from Carnivora: Canidae. Adults and nymphs have been recovered from Artiodactyla: Suidae, and Pholidota: Manidae; adults alone have been taken from Squamata: Colubridae and Viperidae, Testudines: Emydidae, Artiodactyla: Bovidae, and Carnivora: Herpestidae and Viverridae; larvae and nymphs have been found on Carnivora: Mustelidae. There are no records of Amblyomma varanense causing human parasitism. M: Supino (1897a), under the name Ixodes varanensis and given its current status in Horak et al. (2002) F: Warburton (1910), under the name Aponomma gervaisi lucasi, a synonym of Amblyomma varanense N: Sharif (1928), under the name Aponomma gervaisi lucasi L: Sharif (1928), under the name Aponomma gervaisi lucasi Redescriptions M: Supino (1897b), Kaufman (1972) and Hoogstraal and Kim (1985), both under the name Aponomma varanensis, Nowak (2010), Sun et al. (2016), Pun et al. (2018) F: Kaufman (1972) and Hoogstraal and Kim (1985), both under the name Aponomma varanensis, Nowak (2010), Sun et al. (2016), Pun et al. (2018) N: none L: Kadarsan (1971), under the name Aponomma lucasi Note: Santos Dias (1993) treats Amblyomma varanense as a synonym of Amblyomma fuscolineatum and classifies both taxa under the former genus Aponomma. Patra et al. (2016) present a rather unusual description of the male and female of Amblyomma varanense, under the name Aponomma varanense, but it is uncertain whether the specimens under study belong to this species. There are several redescriptions of Amblyomma varanense under the name Aponomma lucasi that are not included in the above lists. See also Amblyomma gervaisi for its confusion with Amblyomma varanense.
