FEMALE FACES FROM MEDIEVAL NAKHCHIVAN

Abstract

Female skulls discovered by archaeologists during excavations at the medieval archaeological site of Kharaba-Gilan (Ordubad district, Azerbaijan) were analyzed. Craniometric and cranioscopic data allowed us to determine the sex, race, age, and some individual characteristics of the skulls. These data were used to adjust the images obtained for facial reconstruction of the women whose skulls were studied. The appearance of these women was visualized in the «Other worlds studio» Facial Reconstruction Laboratory using a modernized method developed by M.M. Gerasimov. The results clearly demonstrate the continuity between modern residents and the population that inhabited the territory of medieval Azerbaijan. The results are interdisciplinary in nature and are of interest to archaeologists and historians, as well as specialists in physical anthropology, human morphology, and ethnography.
