Authors: Smith, Gideon F.;

Kalanchoe porphyrocalyx Baillon 1885

Abstract

8. Kalanchoe porphyrocalyx (Baker) Baillon (1885: 469) [not p. 449 as stated by Descoings (2003: 170)] (Fig. 3). Basionym:— Kitchingia porphyrocalyx Baker (1883: 142). Homotypic synonym:— Bryophyllum porphyrocalyx (Baker) Berger (1930: 412). Type:— MADAGASCAR. Central Madagascar, October 1882, Baron 1708 (holotype Herb. K barcode K000232804!). Heterotypic synonyms:— Kalanchoe sulphurea Baker (1887: 471); Bryophyllum sulphureum (Baker) Berger (1930: 412); Kalanchoe porphyrocalyx var. sulphurea (Baker) Boiteau & Mannoni (1948b: 58). Type of the name Kalanchoe sulphurea:— MADAGASCAR. Central Madagascar, received November 1885 [presumably at Herb. K], Baron 4180 (holotype Herb. K barcode K 000232793!). Designation not validly published:—“ Kalanchoe porphyrocalyx var. typica ” Boiteau & Mannoni (1948b: 58), nom. inval. (Turland et al. 2018: Art. 24.3). Nomenclatural notes:—The typification of the name Kalanchoe porphyrocalyx and its basionym, Kitchingia porphyrocalyx, was dealt with by Smith & Shtein (2021: 234). Note that “ Kitchingia sulphurea Baker ” is not a name, nor a designation, and was not published or even intended by Baker (1887: 471). Taxonomic notes:— Kalanchoe porphyrocalyx is an accepted species (see Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau 1995: 78–81, Descoings 2003: 170, Smith et al. 2019: 293–295, and Smith & Shtein 2021: 234–235). Apart from Kalanchoe porphyrocalyx var. porphyrocalyx, i.e., the autonymic variety, Kalanchoe porphyrocalyx var. sambiranensis Humbert ex Smith & Figueiredo (2019: 206) is also upheld. Kalanchoe porphyrocalyx is included in Kalanchoe subg. Alatae.

Published as part of Smith, Gideon F., 2024, A nomenclatural and taxonomic review of the names and new combinations published between 1881 and 1930 in the genus Kitchingia, basionym of Kalanchoe subg. Kitchingia (Crassulaceae subfam. Kalanchooideae), by John Gilbert Baker (1834 - 1920), Otto Stapf (1857 - 1933), and Alwin Berger (1871 - 1931), pp. 225-242 in Phytotaxa 660 (3) on page 236, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.660.3.2, http://zenodo.org/record/13218178
