ABSTRACT Polar glaciers are reservoirs of dormant microorganisms, preserved for millennia under extreme freezing conditions. With climate change, accelerated melting could reactivate these microbial communities, releasing ancient pathogens and disrupting local and global ecosystems. This manuscript explores the nature of these microorganisms, the potential risks associated with their release and activation, and the implications for human health and the environment.
