Abstract

This report presents results from technological analysis of lithic blade assemblages from Middle- og Late Mesolithic (7500-5000 BC) sites in western Norway. Within the research project “The Storegga tsunami c. 6150 BC - a wave of destruction and the start of something new?” (Life After the Storegga tsunami, LAST) led by Prof. Astrid Nyland (Museum of Archaeology, University of Stavanger), technological analysis of lithic assemblages from 27 Middle Mesolithic (8300-6300 BC) and Late Mesolithic (6300-3900 BC) settlement sites in western and central Norway was conducted in the period 2021-2023. The prosject was funded by The Research Council of Norway (FRIPRO project no. 302858). Central aims for the technological analysis were to investigate patterns of raw material strategies and use, and lithic production concepts (i.e., production methods and percussion techniques for blade production) on a local and regional scale in the period between c. 7500 – 5000 BC, i.e., in order to detect immediate and long-term impacts of the Storegga tsunami event in Late Mesolithic coastal communities around 6150 BC. This report presents results from the dynamical technological classification and attribute analysis individually for each site. The analytical parameters, coding and data from the attribute classification of each artefact is available at Zenodo https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.11549184.
