Abstract

José de Alencar escreve “O Guarani” como uma representação fictícia, recheada com o maior número de informações para tornar crível uma intenção desesperada. Índios, florestas, animais selvagens – o cenário da romantização europeia era um excesso, sua presença asfixiante nos esmagava. Diz-se frequentemente que o indianismo de José de Alencar tentou eliminar esse incômodo. Mas será que ele enxerga apenas um índio idealizado, despido de suas qualidades reais? Creio que não. Lendo o romance com atenção, percebemos que as coisas são mais complexas. O nascimento do Brasil não é simplesmente o cruzamento da cultura com a natureza, mas de uma determinada cultura com uma natureza domesticada. A dúvida de Alencar é como introduzir a civilização num domínio que lhe é estranho, problemática radicalmente distinta daquela descrita pelo Romantismo europeu. "O Guarani", como os mitos primitivos, encontra na figura do incesto (união fraternal de Ceci e Peri) o artifício para a fecundação de uma nova ordem, mas ele é sobretudo um romance das águas, onde a imagem de lavagem das impurezas, permeia a narrativa do início ao seu término.
