Abstract

La creciente escasez de agua representa uno de los desafíos más críticos del siglo XXI, afectando directamente a la industria alimentaria y su sostenibilidad. El agua virtual (AV) constituye un elemento clave para entender y enfrentar esta problemática. El objetivo de esta investigación fue analizar el enfoque en dicho concepto y su interrelación con la seguridad alimentaria y el desperdicio de alimentos. Partiendo de la hipótesis de que la gestión del AV mediante la reducción del desperdicio de alimentos tiene un impacto positivo en la seguridad alimentaria, contribuyendo de manera integral al logro de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) 6, 2 y 12, se empleó una metodología de carácter documental y analítico, para lo cual se llevó a cabo una revisión de literatura científica y de estudios relevantes que abordan aspectos fundamentales del trinomio. Se encontró que una mayor consciencia y gestión del AV puede generar sinergias entre los ODS, optimizando los recursos hídricos sin comprometer la producción de alimentos ni su disponibilidad. Además, se destaca el papel de las políticas públicas y el consumo responsable como herramientas clave para avanzar en este enfoque integrado.
