Apresentamos aqui as ideias basicas a respeito do controle do movimento de atomos neutros por radiacao laser proxima a ressonância. A partir da probabilidade de absorcao da teoria atomica de dois niveis e da conservacao da energia-momentum, tratamos de forma simples os esquemas Zeeman de desaceleracao de feixe atomico, o arranjo de melado optico e a armadilha magneto-optica. Apresentamos tambem algumas simulacoes numericas de Monte-Carlo do movimento de atomos de calcio nessas configuracoes. Finalmente, abordamos a armadilha magneto-optica para atomos de calcio desenvolvida recentemente no grupo e suas futuras aplicacoes em fisica basica e metrologia aplicada.
