Geomática al servicio del patrimonio documental

El SIG histórico de Madrid (1869-1879)
Authors: Álvaro Ruiz Cuevas;

Geomática al servicio del patrimonio documental

Abstract

This article exposes several applications of geographic information systems (GIS) in order to make information from archives and libraries more accessible. It uses the example of the historical GIS of Madrid (1869-1879), designed from the Carlos Ibáñez de Ibero plot plan and the Geographical and Statistical Institute’s topographical records, that have been georeferenced and vectorised. Firstly, we examine the potential of the GIS as a tool for analysis using data from the parcel map and also from other historical sources, such as sanitary statistics or the Bailly-Baillière trade directory. Secondly, we discover how a historical GIS can be used to manage and access documentary heritage, overcoming some of the traditional limitations of free-text search engines. Thirdly, we examine the potential for dissemination of materials produced thanks to the GIS. To this end, two examples of web mapping platforms are presented in which the licences for works from the Archivo de Villa de Madrid and the publications of La Ilustración Española y Americana have been integrated. In conclusion, we stress the need to federate libraries and archives with interdisciplinary university teams in order to tackle such extensive projects.
