Documentos y archivos de los procesos migratorios

Abstract

The text analyzes the importance of vital records in migratory contexts. It highlights how wars, persecution, crises, and disasters have triggered displacement processes that often entail the loss of documentation (identity papers, civil registration records, certificates, and personal files), the absence of which severely restricts access to rights and services. Archives are presented as key tools for the reconstruction of individual and collective identities, as well as for legal processes related to restitution, nationality, and access to public services. The Spanish case is emphasized, where records related to Republican exile have gained renewed relevance through historical memory laws, enabling the recognition of rights for descendants. Archives are thus portrayed as guarantors of rights, memory, and social inclusion. Within this framework, the European project Archives and Traces of Migration (2022–2025), funded by the Creative Europe programme, is introduced. Its aim is to research, preserve, and disseminate the documentary heritage of European migrations by connecting archives with migrant communities and promoting the co-creation of cultural outputs. Institutions from Spain, Croatia, Hungary, and the Netherlands participate in the project, underscoring the need for a more diverse, inclusive, and shared European collective memory.
