The genus Citrus belongs to the family Rutaceae of the order Sapindales. Species of this family usually have flowers with strong scents. The plants range from herbs to shrubs and large trees. Citrus fruits are fleshy pulp which is divided into segments and a leathery rind bearing oil glands. Many Citrus accessions are found in Manipur and they are associated with sociocultural activities. They are found as semi-wild and wild form and some are well-maintained in-home gardens. Citrus jambhiri and Citrus macroptera are two valuable Citrus species of Manipur. They have good nutritive value and significant medicinal values and are utilized in various folk medicines. The essential oil and bioactive compounds from Citrus have several potential applications and thus, Citrus has its applications in medicine, perfumery, cosmetics and aromatherapy and food industries. However, due to population pressure and changing climatic conditions, education on Citrus, there is overexploitation of Citrus; several Citrus are on the verge of extinction. Henceforth, conservation measures should be taken up.
