Este artigo demonstra como as caractersticas nicas dos plsticos tornaram possvel o desenvolvimento da comunicao de massa (fotografia, cinema e registro sonoro). Mostra como, num perodo de baixa industrializao no Brasil, o uso dos plsticos se estabelece na produo de discos fonogrficos quando a fbrica Odeon passa a produzir localmente o que antes era feito no exterior.
