
After tin-based technology was abandoned in 2001, economic and environmental factors have necessitated higher energy efficiency in marine transportation, much of which depends on the performance of antifouling coatings. Part 1 of this article (April 2011 MP) introduced the subject; Part 2 covers topcoating technologies and achieved fuel savings; and Part 3 (June 2011 MP) will present tie-coat technologies, future evolution of antifouling coatings, and conclusions.
