7 Hanover Square Archaeological Data Project

Abstract

This project involves data from a single archaeological legacy project, the 7 Hanover Square Collection, housed with the NYC Archaeological Repository: The Nan A. Rothschild Research Center. This collection is comprised of materials collected from a large-scale city block excavation from Lower Manhattan conducted in 1981 and consists of approximately one hundred thousand artifacts and a companion project archive of paper and photographic records, large format maps, and digital materials. Our team has revived the excavators’ artifact data tables and is now re-cataloging the artifacts to make them accessible through our public website. This effort will be facilitated by leveraging the information from the revived data tables and mapping the NYC Archaeological Repository's standardized vocabulary onto the original project terminology. This project also aims to digitize and integrate the project archives to make them publicly accessible and develop a K-12 curriculum along with additional digital programming. The planning and theoretical work for this project is supported through our project team's funded participation in the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Institutes for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities grant "Networking Archaeological Data and Communities (NADAC)" administered by Alexandria Archive Institute/Open Context.
