Eterna caducidad, catástrofe y memoria

Abstract

Este artículo reflexiona sobre la caducidad del tiempo, la historia como catástrofe continua y la memoria en la obra de Walter Benjamin. Para llevar a cabo esta tarea, se analizan distintas figuras benjaminianas de la transitoriedad, la muerte y la melancolía. Esta reflexión cobra vigencia en los tiempos actuales, en los que se vislumbra la posibilidad de la destrucción de todas las formas de vida en el planeta como resultado del calentamiento global y de la lógica de escalada a los extremos que caracteriza a las “nuevas guerras”. El trabajo comienza abordando la figura de la “eterna caducidad” de la historia-naturaleza que delinearon los poetas barrocos alemanes en el Trauerspiel, para analizar a continuación los efectos del paso del tiempo en los objetos culturales y la tristeza que genera el intenso apego al mundo de las cosas, incluyendo la caracterización de la alegoría como “fragmento” y “ruina” de la modernidad. Esta primera parte del artículo se centra en el estudio de Benjamin sobre el Barroco. La segunda parte está dedicada a discutir el estatus que adquiere la imagen del recuerdo en la modernidad, en la que se destaca tanto su condición efímera como salvadora.
