Tipo de cambio real en Ecuador: descomposición y desalineamiento con el tipo de cambio real observado

Abstract

El objetivo de la investigación es el análisis del índice de tipo de cambio real (ITCR) del Ecuador considerando dos aristas. La primera, indagar la evolución del índice a través de los factores que intervienen en su cálculo: factor cotización nominal y factor precios. La segunda, cuantificar el desalineamiento del ITCR con respecto a su valor de equilibrio (TCRE). El periodo de análisis comprende desde el 2003 hasta el primer semestre del 2021. El TCRE se estima utilizando la metodología BEER. Las variables incluidas son: términos de intercambio (TI), gasto de gobierno, productividad, remesas, apertura comercial (AC) y activos externos netos del panorama monetario (AEN). Se concluye que la mayor subvaloración del ITCR ocurrió desde el 2003 hasta antes de la crisis financiera del 2009, periodo en el que el ITCR tuvo un marcado periodo de depreciación explicado principalmente por el factor Cotización Nominal. El periodo de mayor sobrevaloración el ITCR ocurrió en el periodo subsiguiente al shock experimentado por el país por la disminución del precio internacional de las materias en el año 2014. La fundamental que incide en mayor medida en cambios en la evolución del TCRE es la AC.
