Los devenires del veganismo

Abstract

A mediados del siglo XX, los activistas Donald Watson, Eva Watson, Fay Henderson, Elsie (Sally) Shrigley y Leslie Cross conceptualizaron el veganismo como un principio ético capaz de esculpir una forma de vida alternativa a la construida a partir de diferentes formas de “esclavitud animal”. El veganismo, en contraste con el concepto de especismo, fue desde sus inicios una apuesta afirmativa por la constitución de nuevos modos de existencia. Con el transcurrir del siglo XX y lo que llevamos del siglo XXI, la noción de veganismo pasó de ser casi desconocida a estar presente en el lenguaje cotidiano. Sin embargo, esta generalización ha tendido a reducir al veganismo a una moral inflexible o a una identidad asentada en prácticas de consumo de productos alternativos a los de origen animal. A contracorriente, el siglo XXI también ha sido testigo de una revitalización del concepto que cuestiona ese reduccionismo y lo tiende a pluralizar. Así, actualmente se alude a los veganismos negros, indígenas, populares, (trans)feministas, crip, entre otros. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo reconstruir, de manera genealógica, ese trasegar del concepto y proponer un abordaje que esté en sintonía con las prácticas y los usos contemporáneos.
