Abstract

Diabetes melitus merupakan kondisi dimana pankreas tidak dapat memproduksi insulin yang cukup untuk tubuh. Angka penderita diabetes melitus diperkirakan akan terus meningkat sekitar 578 juta jiwa pada tahun 2030. Penatalaksanaan diabetes melitus melalui terapi farmakologi dan non farmakologi. Terapi farmakologi dinilai cukup mahal dan menimbulkan efek samping, sehingga mulai beralih menggunakan herbal, diantaranya tanaman salam. Daun salam memiliki aktivitas sebagai antidiabetik, dengan kandungan flavonoid. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk merangkum mekanisme ekstrak daun salam (Syzygium Polyanthum) sebagai antidiabetik pada beberapa artikel ilmiah. Metode yang digunakan pada review artikel ini yaitu dengan melakukan studi literatur pada artikel ilmiah yang dipublikasi tahun 2011 – 2021, berbahasa Inggris atau Indonesia, dan uji pra klinik. Strategi pencarian jurnal ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan Keywords: “Syzygium polyanthum, diabetes mellitus, hypoglycemic, hyperglycemic”. Terdapat 5 artikel yang sesuai dan dilakukan review. Hasil review artikel menunjukkan ekstrak daun salam memiliki aktivitas menurunkan kadar gula darah melalui beberapa mekanisme, menghambat radikal bebas ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) melalui transfer elektron serta menghambat reaksi peroksidasi. Kesimpulan kandungan ekstrak daun salam memiliki aktivitas antidiabetik melalui mekanisme menghambat radikal bebas ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species)
