The article examines the well-known problem of the origin of the ancient Bulgars. Due to text size restrictions, it was decided that it should not give an overview of the theories and not present historiography on the topic. Instead, the sources were analyzed again and the results of the auxiliary scientific disciplines (Linguistics, Archeology, Anthropology and Genetics) were summarized, with the greatest attention paid to linguistic data.
