In the world there are about 11.5 million migrant domestic workers, 73 per cent of whom are women or girls (ILO, 2015). The sector is particularly important in countries with a large migrant women population, following the main migration routes which characterize contemporary mobility patterns. Migrant domestic workers from India, the Philippines and Indonesia go mainly to other Asian countries, the Middle East, Europe or North America. In Eastern Europe, workers from Poland, Ukraine, Romania and Moldova are mainly going toward Western Europe. In South or Central America, as well as in several African countries, we find mainly internal or South‒South migrations.
