Intoxicação crônica por Pteridium arachnoideum em bovinos no nordeste do estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil

Abstract

A planta Pteridium aquilinum, popularmente conhecida como samambaia, e comumente encontrada em solos acidos, arenosos e de baixa fertilidade. Os bovinos normalmente sao relutantes em ingerir a samambaia. A intoxicacao ocorre quando os animais passam por privacao nutricional, ingestao acidental de feno contaminado pela samambaia ou em animais que adquirem habito de consumo da planta. Os sinais clinicos variam com a quantidade ingerida da planta e com o tempo de exposicao. Relata-se a ocorrencia de dois casos de intoxicacao cronica por samambaia em um bovino no municipio de Sao Marcos, localizado na regiao nordeste do estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. O primeiro caso cursou com os sinais clinicos de disfagia, halitose, salivacao e a presenca de tumores na orofaringe. O segundo caso apresentou tambem disfagia, regurgitacao e impossibilidade da passagem da sonda oroesofagica devido a presenca de tumoracoes na orofaringe. O fato dos animais serem mantidos em um campo com baixa oferta de pastagem, a presenca da planta no campo, os sinais clinicos juntamente com os achados de necropsia e histopatologico confirmaram o diagnostico de intoxicacao cronica por samambaia.
