Abstract

<div class="htmlview paragraph">The 2-Stroke Engine Oil Subcommittee of the JSAE has developed the following five JASO (Japan Automobile Standards Organization) 2-Stroke Gasoline Engine Oil Quality Standards for motorcycle, utility and outboard engines:</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph"> <ol class="list nostyle"> <li class="list-item"> <span class="li-label">1)</span> <div class="htmlview paragraph">JASO M340-92 Lubricity test procedure for evaluating two stroke gasoline engine oils</div></li> <li class="list-item"> <span class="li-label">2)</span> <div class="htmlview paragraph">JASO M341-92 Detergency test procedure for evaluating two stroke gasoline engine oils</div></li> <li class="list-item"> <span class="li-label">3)</span> <div class="htmlview paragraph">JASO M342-92 Smoke test procedure for evaluating two stroke gasoline engine oils</div></li> <li class="list-item"> <span class="li-label">4)</span> <div class="htmlview paragraph">JASO M343-92 Exhaust system blocking test procedure for evaluating two stroke gasoline engine oils</div></li> <li class="list-item"> <span class="li-label">5)</span> <div class="htmlview paragraph">JASO M345-93 Two stroke gasoline engine oils</div></li></ol></div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">These standards consist of four kinds of engine test procedure and a classification system which includes three physico chemical properties of an oil.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">The concept of the standards are summarized as follows:</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph"> <ol class="list nostyle"> <li class="list-item"> <span class="li-label">1)</span> <div class="htmlview paragraph">The standards should be established based on a realistic data base.</div></li> <li class="list-item"> <span class="li-label">2)</span> <div class="htmlview paragraph">A classification system based on performance levels should be adopted for the standard.</div></li> <li class="list-item"> <span class="li-label">3)</span> <div class="htmlview paragraph">The standards should be beneficial for consumers.</div></li></ol></div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">They should be helpful for consumers to select the proper 2-stroke gasoline engine oil (hereinafter referred to as “2T oil”) and should also contribute to improving the quality of 2T oils in the market.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">They have been developed in cooperation with the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and the CEC (Coordinating European Council).</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">It is to be hoped that this will be the first important step for establishing 2T Oil ISO Standards in the near future by cooperation with the PAJ (Petroleum Association of Japan), ASTM and CEC.</div>
