Thin-Lift Recycling of Asphalt Pavement

Abstract

<div class="htmlview paragraph">Five basic steps of efficient and economical continuous thin-lift asphalt pavement recycling are listed and the design features of the Cutler Repaver are described. The huge, mobile, self-propelled asphalt paving plant utilizes the five steps with integrated components as follows:</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph"> <ol class="list nostyle"> <li class="list-item"> <span class="li-label">1.</span> <div class="htmlview paragraph">Softening the old road surface with radiant heat produced by ceramic emitters.</div> </li> <li class="list-item"> <span class="li-label">2.</span> <div class="htmlview paragraph">Loosening a thin layer of old material with air-bag mounted scarifiers.</div> </li> <li class="list-item"> <span class="li-label">3.</span> <div class="htmlview paragraph">Mixing new and old material with liquid asphalt in a pug mill.</div> </li> <li class="list-item"> <span class="li-label">4.</span> <div class="htmlview paragraph">Laying and compacting the new road surface with a vibratory screed.</div> </li> <li class="list-item"> <span class="li-label">5.</span> <div class="htmlview paragraph">Completing the softening, loosening, mixing, laying and compacting operations in one continuous operation.</div> </li> </ol> </div>
