<div class="htmlview paragraph">In this paper, failures of machine components are described, systematized, and analyzed. An attempt is made to trace the causes of each failure, describe the mechanism, list the influencing factors, and suggest the remedies. A meaningful analysis of a failed part is one of the most useful sources of information available to the engineer. From the study of failure he can frequently learn whether the failure was caused by a defective design, inadequate material properties, poor production practice, or service abuse, and can thereby devise necessary improvements to eliminate failure.</div>
