Brushless Synchronous Propulsion Motor

Abstract

<div class="htmlview paragraph">The development of a brushless synchronous motor with d-c motor characteristics suitable for vehicle propulsion applications is described. The motor is statically commutated, using thyristors triggered by rotor position logic. It may be operated from d-c power sources such as batteries or from a-c sources such as engine driven alternators, depending on the commutation circuit used with the motor.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">The motor has high speed capability, coupled with high torque ability, thus providing the operating range required for severe applications such as military and off highway vehicles.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">The three basic elements of the motor system: the motor, power converter, and trigger circuits are discussed in detail. Mechanical, electrical, and control characteristics are reviewed.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">Performance data on motors built for vehicular application are also presented.</div>
