Many foundations failures have been observed during earthquakes because of excessive settlement and tilt. Experimental and analytical studies have been conducted to develop procedures for estimation of settlement. Empirical equations have also been suggested . The settlement and tilt are calculated following pseudo-static procedures. Recently procedures have been developed to estimate the seismic settlement from in-situ tests such as standard penetrationt and Cone penetration tests and shear wave velocity measurements, and centrifuge tests. State of the practice still remains dependent on empirical procedures. The estimation of seismic settlements is an essential feature of performance based design. Significant developments for estimation of foundation settlements for seismic loading are discussed in this papaer.
