Sonolência Excessiva e suas Conseqüências

Abstract

A sonolência excessiva diurna é um fenômeno muito comum na população em geral, com causas muito variadas. A sonolência tem sido responsabilizada por uma série de grandes acidentes, verdadeiras catástrofes, como a explosão da usina atómica de Chernobil, do grande derramamento de petróleo na costa do Alasca pelo petroleiro Exxon Valdez, e outros. Quando ocasionada por distúrbios organicos, como nas hipersonias do tipo narcolepsia ou em sindromes respiratórias que causam uma hipersonia secundaria, necessitam de urna conduta diagnostica e terapêutica específica. Os autores fazem uma revisão de variadas causas de sonolência, com atenção aos mecanismos fisiopatológicos e sugestões de tratamento.
