This general paper reviews Canadian programs in Coal Liquefaction research, development and economic assessment. The current "state of the art" of coal liquefaction technology is seen to be unlikely to offer immediate prospects for implementation during a period when crude oil supply costs are below $ 45 per barrel. The developments of improved multi-stage processes, the integration of advanced coal preparation processes, and the combination of bitumen/coal co-processing are outlined as routes to improve the process economics for specific Canadian conditions.
