Briquetting coal with binders and statistical evaluation of briquet tests

Abstract

In view of the difficulties of controlling the various factors of coal briquetting with binder, statistical methods are very useful in the investigations of the briquetting process in laboratories, and even more so in industrial plants. A summary of the most important recent developments in coal briquetting with binders is first given, in order to help in the planning of specific research programs under local conditions of individual briquetting plants. After a summary or previous studies on the evaluation of the physical quality of briquets, an application of certain statistical methods is described, including factorial designs of experiments; analyses of variance; tests of significance; and correlation, regression and index formulae. A detailed description of such techniques is given with a view to facilitating the organization and analysis of research programs by agglomeration engineers. For the convenience of the reader, the statistical data are gathered in an Appendix.
