Barrier Rated Tubing Hanger Plug Innovation: Sharing Insights on Tangible and Intangible Value Creation Through Successful Installations While Eliminating Operational Risks

Abstract

Abstract Objectives/Scope The innovative barrier-rated tubing hanger plug has been widely adopted by the Operator following a successful pilot installation in September 2022. Some challenges encountered during the pilot phase were identified, leading to a revised design for subsequent installations, ensuring more effective implementation. This paper highlights the lessons learned from the pilot, key best practices, and the tangible and intangible value the Operator realized through the use of this technology Methods, Procedures, Process Well selection criteria were primarily based on the well completion design. Wells with 3-1/2″ tubing were automatically identified for the use of this technology, followed by further analysis of available well barrier elements during the nipple-down of the BOP and nipple-up of the production tree. Once the well design was selected, the tubing hanger profile was finalized to meet therequirements of the barrier-rated tubing hanger plug, utilizing the conventional H-type hanger profile. Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and System Integration Tests (SIT) were conducted on the manufactured tubing hanger to ensure compatibility with the plug. These tests were performed in accordance with API 19V barrier acceptance standards to qualify the plug as a barrier in both liquid and gas mediums. Results, Observations, Conclusions The planned replications were fully successful, with no compromises to the well barrier policy and no well control incidents. The contingency slickline plug was not activated in any of these wells, which helped eliminate operational risks associated with slickline operations. On average, the implementation of this technology resulted in a rig time savings of approximately 10 hours per well. Novel/Additive Information This paper serves as a valuable reference for other operators seeking to optimize their well designs while maintaining compliance with well barrier policies, by adopting a simpler installation methodology with no significant cost impact.
