Smart End Fitting for Flexible Pipes

Abstract

Abstract Failures in the annulus region of flexible pipes associated to corrosion related phenomena due to water ingress have posed significant challenges to the oil and gas industry, impacting reliability and operational safety of these equipment. Once the annulus flooding is one of the most prevalent damage mechanisms in flexible pipes, the early detection of it is essential. To address that, a new concept of use for end fittings in flexible pipes is being developed, with new functionalities embedded besides the traditional ones, called SMART END FITTING, by transforming this accessory into a device to detect and monitor flooding of the annulus region. The solution integrates pressure measurement system, electronic water detection sensors, and ultrasonic inspection zones directly into the end fitting, enabling early detection of flooding. Developed through extensive developments in end fitting technology, special accesses, besides several functionality tests, the SMART END FITTING demonstrated effectiveness to detect the ingress of water in the annulus, optimizing maintenance and inspections. This technology sets a new standard for proactive flexible pipe management, reducing costs and improving safety in offshore operations.
