Artificial Intelligence to Achieve Sustainable Development Goal 12 Responsible Consumption and Production

Abstract

This chapter examines the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in promoting Sustainable Development Goal 12, which focuses on ensuring responsible consumption and production patterns. Through a detailed and multidisciplinary exploration, we analyze how AI can optimize supply chains, foster circular economies, improve waste management, and increase transparency and traceability in production processes. Concrete case studies are presented that demonstrate the applicability and benefits of AI technologies in these areas, highlighting significant innovations in recycling, sustainable design and smart manufacturing. This analysis not only highlights the ability of AI to address complex and multidimensional challenges in the context of sustainable development, but also raises critical considerations about the ethical, technical and operational challenges involved. The chapter concludes with recommendations for future research and practical implementation of AI-based solutions, with the aim of maximizing their positive impact on global sustainability.
