Los estándares como artefactos

Abstract

Si bien la vida de toda clase de artefactos es uno de los ámbitos más frecuentados dentro de los estudios sobre la cultura material del mundo actual, no ha ocurrido lo mismo con los estándares, unos artefactos silenciosamente omnipresentes en prácticamente todos los terrenos de la existencia individual y social. En este artículo me propongo abordar, desde la filosofía de la tecnología, los estándares para identificar sus rasgos y caracterizarlos. Este trabajo está estructurado en tres partes. En la primera parte reviso el estado del arte sobre el tratamiento de los estándares y la estandarización. Analizo cómo se comprende habi-tualmente a los estándares y a la estandarización con el propósito de preparar el terreno para introducir la idea de que los estándares son artefactos que deben ser interpretados en su doble papel de andamios y cemento del mundo artificial actual. En la segunda sección presento un conjunto de rasgos para caracterizarlos. La identificación de esos rasgos está inspirada en la caracterización general de los artefactos defendida por Broncano (2012), entre otros. Finalmente presento unas conclusiones que apuntan hacia la contribución que puede realizar la filosofía de la tecnología sobre los estándares y la estandarización.
