Abstract

Le passage d’un pouvoir temporel separe du pouvoir spirituel a une forme protestante de double pouvoir avec la sacralite du prince chef de son Eglise semble s’etre fait dans l’urgence du contexte de la rupture de Luther avec la papaute romaine. L’article examine en detail comment cette nouvelle combinaison des deux pouvoirs trouve ses racines dans la longue duree du Moyen Âge a partir du 14e siecle a travers la figure biblique du roi-pretre Melchisedech. De modele de pretre catholique, il devient un modele de roi officiant, legitimant la creation d’Eglises nationales et les interventions laiques sur le spirituel dans le Saint Empire, au contraire du royaume de France, ou le roi parvient a controler son Eglise nationale sans rompre avec Rome.
