Abstract

Le « Jardin Elysée », aménagé à partir de 1799 par Alexandre Lenoir dans le musée des Monuments français, occupe une place bien spécifique par rapport aux salles du musée elles-mêmes. Dans ces salles, le classement des œuvres obéit à un ordre chronologique. Dans le « Jardin Élysée », au contraire, les monuments funéraires des personnages les plus illustres – rois, guerriers, hommes de lettres – dont la France s’honore (Dagobert Ier, Descartes, Molière, Henri IV, Héloïse et Abélard, etc.) sont juxtaposés sans souci de progression historique. C’est que, conformément à la représentation de la vertu propre au xviiie siècle, les grands hommes sont de tous les temps. La végétation crée une sorte de continuum atemporel. L’écart historique entre deux monuments se trouve comme annulé par la présence de la nature. Le cycle saisonnier de la végétation assure en outre à la figure du grand homme une forme sensible de pérennité. L’Elysée remplit dans l’esprit de Lenoir une triple fonction : à la fois musée, jardin et cimetière, il entend susciter chez le promeneur mélancolie et vertu.
