Quatre ans après les fastes des congrès internationaux de l’exposition universelle parisienne de 1900, organiser un congrès scientifique international à Saint Louis était une gageure. Pour atteindre leur but, ses organisateurs développèrent une critique radicale de la pratique congressiste contemporaine, et affirmèrent qu’elle conduisait au morcellement disciplinaire. Ainsi voulaient-ils faire de Saint Louis le lieu de naissance d’un nouveau type de congrès pour l’unité de la science. La trajectoire de son principal promoteur, Hugo Münsterberg, venu d’Allemagne, ainsi que les débats qu’il occasionna, permettent de se rendre compte que ce congrès était le résultat du transfert aux États-Unis de la redéfinition du rôle de la philosophie comme discipline reine initiée par les néokantiens de Bade.
