Abstract

Cet article examine les origines de l’histoire de l’art non occidental à travers le travail profondément anti-classique de l’historien de l’art autrichien Josef Strzygowski. La formation sociale, politique et culturelle que Strzygowski reçut à la fin du xixe siècle à la périphérie de l’Empire austro-hongrois lui a procuré le goût pour des formes d’art non canoniques, de même qu’une puissante antipathie à l’égard de ce qu’il nommait « l’art du pouvoir » méditerranéen. Il apprit beaucoup de son prédécesseur Rudolf von Eitelberger, mais aussi d’autres collègues et collectionneurs des périphéries de l’Autriche, et produisit des synthèses novatrices qui insistaient sur le besoin d’étudier des formes non-traditionnelles de beauté. Ses liens avec le nazisme rendirent en fin de compte difficile pour ceux qui défendent l’art non occidental de le louer comme leur prédécesseur, mais il devint tout de même une sorte de héros pour certains nationalistes dans les périphéries habsbourgeoises, et hors d’Europe.
