La serie de Antonio Conselheiro y la rebelión popular de Canudos en la prensa periódica internacional hacia 1897

Abstract

El presente trabajo se propone vincular la guerra de Canudos, acontecida en el estado de Bahía (Brasil) entre 1896 y 1897, con la expansión de la prensa periódica internacional, sobre todo de las fuentes telegráficas, hacia finales del siglo XIX. Lo cual se realizará a partir de un análisis de las operaciones de figuración bajo las que fue leída e interpretada la figura de Antonio Conselheiro. El caso del “mesías brasileño” es paradigmático para leer las operaciones y el funcionamiento de la red de mediaciones que operaba más allá del territorio brasileño, en países tan distantes como EEUU, España, México, Argentina y Chile.Ampliando el célebre trabajo de Walnice Nogueira Galvão (1977) trabajaré con un conjunto de textualidades periodísticas internacionales que refieren a los modos en los que la experiencia de Antonio Conselheiro se configuró en dos acepciones, en tanto un desvío del cristianismo y como un ícono rebelde. El objetivo del presente artículo es reflexionar sobre las formas en las que se interpretaron la fama del líder religioso, su muerte y las teorías sobre los orígenes del fanatismo en Canudos, donde, en diálogo con posturas críticas letradas, cobró especial relevancia la forma del relato popular.
