La campaña presidencial del herrerismo en 1946 desde El Debate

Abstract

En este artículo se estudia la campaña presidencial del herrerismo en 1946, desde El Debate. La candidatura de Luis Alberto de Herrera, la propaganda partidaria, la diferenciación de su propuesta política con la de sus adversarios, en especial con el batllismo, y el influjo del impacto del éxito electoral de Juan Domingo Perón en el Uruguay constituyen los principales temas de análisis. El herrerismo construyó su campaña mediática con el culto a la personalidad de su líder, simbolizó el escenario electoral como la salvación o el caos, una “batalla espiritual” entre el presente/pasado o el porvenir. Su retórica política aspiró a salir de los estrechos límites partidarios para conquistar a la nación más allá de las diferencias ideológicas, con un discurso de orden y de salvaguardia de la religión, la libertad y la auténtica democracia. En su óptica el destino del Uruguay estaba en riesgo de descomposición moral si se seguía bajo el dominio del batllismo. Un mensaje esperanzador se vislumbró en el horizonte con el triunfo del peronismo, utilizado como símbolo de los vientos de renovación del continente.
