Abstract

Ces dernières années, la stérilisation féminine a vu son taux s’accroître fortement au Guatemala, principalement auprès des populations indigènes. Certaines femmes qui y ont recours n’ont pas conscience de son caractère définitif, de ses effets secondaires, ou encore de l’existence d’autres moyens de contraception. Les institutions et les personnels de santé, préjugeant de l’incompréhension des patientes indigènes en termes de nécessités sanitaires et sociales, les considèrent parfois inaptes à prendre les « bonnes » décisions en raison de leur « culture », qu’ils préjugent irrationnelle, machiste... Ils cherchent alors à influencer ces décisions pour les rendre conformes à une norme procréative prédéfinie. En lien direct avec les exigences des organismes d’aide internationale qui financent les programmes guatémaltèques de planification familiale, cette norme procréative s’inspire d’une idéologie néo-malthusienne. Une analyse intersectionnelle permet de déconstruire les discours, pratiques et représentations sociales liées à la planification familiale afin de mieux comprendre les rapports qui s’instaurent entre institutions, prestataires, patientes et communautés, dans un pays marqué par des violences sexuelles, passées et présentes, à l’encontre des femmes indigènes mayas, et une volonté de contrôle sur leurs corps.
