Cet article interroge le rôle joué par le collectif de travail à l’égard de la socialisation émotionnelle. En s’appuyant sur une étude comparative réalisée dans les pompes funèbres, un service pédiatrique hospitalier et deux brigades de police, l’article montre que le collectif s’impose à l’individu comme un agent socialisateur essentiel. Dans ces métiers, le travail relationnel et émotionnel avec l’usager est indispensable à la mise en œuvre technique du travail. Plus qu’un simple prolongement à la formation théorique de l’individu, il est fondateur de l’éthos professionnel. Dans les cas observés, il apparaît également comme un espace privilégié pour partager les émotions liées à la nature du travail. En cela, il se distingue d’autres types de soutiens tels que l’entourage privé ou les dispositifs de soutien mis en place par l’institution.
