Abstract

La recherche sur les musulmans de la Péninsule indochinoise de la période coloniale à nos jours s’est souvent confondue avec celle des Chams. Perçue comme unité réduite et unifiée, la petite communauté musulmane cambodgienne est aujourd’hui plus que jamais considérée comme une. Or les recherches menées sur les Chams et/ou sur les musulmans du Cambodge témoignent d’une grande confusion de termes, conduisant à un amalgame allant totalement à l’encontre de la réalité sociale chame ou musulmane cambodgienne, aussi dynamique qu’insaisissable. à travers l’étude d’une sélection d’exonymes et d’endonymes replacés dans leurs contextes, l’article introduit cette complexité et cette diversité sociales en termes de procédés d’énonciations. En se posant en alternative aux référents classiquement attribués d’ethnie, de religion et de nation, ces pages s’interrogent sur la validité des catégories mêmes que l’ethnologie emploie pour dénommer ses « objets ».
